Many of my most recent ceramic sculptures include deeply carved surfaces. The carving is used to establish another layer of information in these works. In my new pieces with tiles it refers to organic systems and structures of growth found in nature, while incorporating the use of decorative patterning. On some pieces the carving seems like a naturally occurring surface, while on others the carving creates a juxtaposition and tension between the form and the surface.
